Summary: National Study Finds Widespread Sexual Harassment of Students in Grades 7 to 12
By: Jenny Anderson
About half of the secondary students (middle school to high school) reported that they were sexual harassed in 2010-2011 school year according to a new study. A majority of them suffered health problems such as sleeplessness, stomachaches, and some did not want to go to school. “Unwelcome sexual behavior that takes place in person or electronically” is a definition of sexual harassment, from the American Association of University Women. Mostly the percentage of girls being harassed is more than boys, but overall, boys and girls both experience harassment. For boys, being called gay is the worst. For girls, being commented or joked sexually about them is the case. Many associations want schools to speak up about sexual harassment. The more people talk about it, the more they will aware. “We want to encourage schools to know what Title IX is,” according to Holly Kearl.
Response
I agree with the fact that everybody has been sexually harassed. Experiencing middle school in Vietnam and high school in America, I saw lots of harassment going on around. Some were just jokes, but some were really serious and hurtful. Nobody wants to be bullied. Sexual harassment is one type of bullying. The problem is lots of schools do not want to talk about it. They are afraid that talking about those issues would lose their popularity comparing to other schools, or maybe they are just afraid to talk about sex. A lot of religious schools have some strict rules between boys and girls, however, public schools are so open. One important value of America is individual freedom, nobody can tell or force anyone to do anything. There is nothing wrong with being gay, being fat, or having a sexual part of the body full developed. There is nothing wrong with not being beautiful because it is just a standard that the society put out for people to judge each other. I personally disagree with sexual harassment, however, getting rid of it 100% is a tough job that everybody need to do together.
