Summary
According to Janet I. TU’s article “Microsoft Stock Price Overshadows Message” in the Seattle Times (November 16, 2011), Microsoft had an annual meeting of shareholders on Tuesday at Bellevue’s Meydenbauer Center. After Steve Ballmer presented the company’s recent success and the future plan, the shareholders said something upset about the price of stock and the large stockpile of cash. Ballmer states the company has paid $70 billion for tax, and they made $23.2 billion for benefit last year. Also, Ballmer sold the windows7 and Office 2010 in high price. Now, Microsoft pays their attention in Office 365 and Windows Azure to produce Windows 8 recently. Because windows phone only has 2% of users in the worldwide smartphone market, Microsoft would be partner with Nokia. In addition, Microsoft closed the Skype to make it better. The more important thing which shareholders paid attention to is the stock price. The stock price is always changing from $20 to $30 last ten years. There was about $57 billion of Microsoft stockpile cash. Someone states the Microsoft did not treat them as the owners. Peter Klein, who is the chief Financial Officer, stated the principle is to make the bonus balance to the shareholders and can solve big problems. Bill Gates said the big thing is to produce new goods and the quantity of the new goods. Ballmer said the Microsoft could not be separated because of raising the shareholders’ value. They have approved something. First, they recognized Deloitte & Touche of the company’s independent auditor. Second, they would give the executives compensation. Third, they change the time to hold the advisory vote from three years to one year. After the meeting, Microsoft’s stock price raised 18 cent.
Response
When I finish reading this article, I feel like the shareholders only care about the money that they are getting. They do not care the development of the company. I feel confuse about that because I think when the company is growing strongly, they will earn more money from it. Also, I admire Steve Ballmer because before I read those articles about Microsoft, the only person I knew is Bill Gates. However, according to his speaking and the tendency of Microsoft, I think Ballmer will be a very good CEO. Even though he is not an entrepreneur, it is also very difficult to do better in others company. It is easy to open a shop but hard to keep it always open. My parents always use this phrase to encourage me.
