Summary

According to Hannah Wallace’s article”In High Schools, a Critical Lens on Food” in the New York Times Wednesday Review (October 26, 2011), Joni Tonda taught her students about awareness of what they eat and how food companies target them. This new program was based on “FoodFight”, a nonprofit group, which was created by the group’s founders, Carolyn Cohen and Deborah Lewison-Grant, and this is new learning program for student in high school to comprehend the important of food because 35% of adolescents are overweight in US nowadays. This lesson plan combines media literacy, politics, nutrition and cooking to help students understand food labels easily, to make their own good meals, and how to diet such as experience many trips to various kinds of farm and food coops. Sarah Katz thinks that student don’t want to do what older people tell them to because they just want make their own decision. Therefore, this program will help students to improve their knowledge about food to care about that by leading students have a critical look at marketing campaign and spread their knowledge to other people in society, especially in poor neighborhood, because food is an important effect to health . Day by day, FoodFight program become effective and successful. For instance, from the article, Takiyah Newton, a senior, who wants to take this class and she has learned a lot about how to know the companies trick. Also, Ms. Tonda had seen that her student change their behavior, for example, one student don’t want her mom buy food from industrial producers; another student drink water instead of soda or juice after he studied at this class.

Response

I think this article is very true. FoodFight program Is a really good program for student because it help students understand about food to apply their knowledge to have a good meal everyday, and could improve their health. Also, they could avoid the unhealthy food. For my experience, I didn’t want to eat Mc Donald’s food after I had seen a lot documentary about this fast food because it will gain my weight and affect my health. FoodFight is a helpful organization for all students all over the world.
