Childproofing: Crawling Your Way to Safety
By BOB TEDESCHI
Published: October 26, 2011
SUMMARY:
Driven by his own experience -when his son was in danger due to his home's unreliable childproofing –Bob Tedeschi – the article's author- spoke with three specialists in the field: Colleen Driscoll, Julie Vallese and Don Mays and the first point that they talked about was the importance of having update information because tools that were useful years ago such as: flat-screens TVs and the plastic outlet covers have disadvantages and there are accidents related to those childproofing that today's childproofing doesn't have.
Today the normal retractable were replaced by those outlets which cover with horizontally sliding doors and there are other options that can be useful. Another advice from the specialists was to put attention to the cords and avoid using tacks to adjust the cord because it results counterproductive.
Childproofing ranging from cheap outlet covers to expensive cordless windows, cordless cellular etc. but all these are necessary measures for the safety of children, Mr. Mays said. He gave some other advises to protect children to the most dangerous room in the whole house which is “the kitchen”. He recommended to lockdown the kitchen with a special modern magnetic handle with a cost of 31 for four doors.
He also recommended locking the bathrooms with a toilet block, a strategy that hasn't change like other childproofing.
They finished their advices with the stairs for what they recommended a consulted because the child gates needs more supervision and attention than parents can provide.
RESPONSE:
at first my attitude forward those preventive measures was of disagreement because i thought they were too expensive and i saw it as a way to spend ridiculous amounts of money in things that could have an easy solution, but this article changed my mind due to all the examples and the seriousness with which they addressed the issue. Now i think that it's true that you spend a lot of money for all these childproofing but it is also true that artifacts of daily use that we see as risk-free can be the cause of a catastrophic tragedy and all the new inventions and the new technology to create these childproofing are worth and definitely it worth to spend the money on it.
