According to Helene Cooper’s article “Obama takes aim at inequality in education” in the New York Times (April 6, 2011), Obama was aiming at the inequality in civil right, specifically in education. He wanted the African American community to have the opportunity to study just like any other race. Moreover, focusing on education was another way for Obama to reach his goal which was winning the upcoming election in 2012. Last time in the 2008 election he won 90% of the African American community. This time Obama would also concentrate on the minority peoples. Back to education, Obama was working with Mr. Sharpton, a minister and an activist, in order to decrease the high school drop-out rate.

Response:

In my opinion, Obama was doing the right thing. Education is the most important issue. Instead of focusing on fighting with other countries, Obama showed that he care for the future generation especially to his own race. More and more people dropped out of school during high school years, that is why Obama, a president of the United States, had do something about it. Sometimes I don’t agree with his policy. However this time he did well in order to maintain his supporters. A good president in my opinion should not only focus on wars, economy, but also knows how to deal with education.
