By Jennifer Medina
Summary:
According to Jennifer Medina's article "Boys and Girls Together, Taught Separately in Public School" in the New York Times (March 10, 2009), the author expresses some US schools nowadays are still applying single-sex class in education. Critics have argued that what benefit comes with segregating gender? Some teachers support school should be separated by sex in order to improve stresses and competitions in classes, it would be one of the certain ways to create neurotic children and adults . Other confirm single sex school is unacceptable as Kim Ganty, president of National Organization for Women, said separating would only promote gender stereotypes. The question is what are you trying to accomplish with segregating and how it would end up with students' future?
Response:
In my opinion, I think that the author only give a neutral conclusion to her article. There is no record right or wrong. She just gives comments, either critics or support, it does not show the emphasis of personal point of view. Either same-sex or opposite-sex is set in classes, it is hard to say because it depends on how parental resolution. Most traditional families often instill strong gender based values on their kids. Thus, intervention of outside is rare, it is neutral to be on which side. For me, this is wrong headed. Separating boys and girls is an awful idea. It simply hurts the gender relations and even more, the participating to partner in works. Both sides are going to lose experience in interaction of the institution, including a complex society of different genders i.e: bio-sexual, opposite sex; And face the fact that this world is an abstract meaning full of cultures, religions and ideals.
