Summary

In America, there are lots of different racial and ethnic groups. The problem is people usually play with their own groups. Political scientist Robert Putnam and his colleagues from Harvard said “Diversity seems to trigger not in-group/out-group division, but anomie or social isolation.” In highly diverse cities and towns are more likely trust other groups but still not as their own group. Putnam researched for 6 years to know a precipitous decline in the nation’s “social capital” was so surprised that more different groups’ areas had less political clout and less recreation system. Wendy Berry Mendes who is a social psychologist at Harvard added when students work in a group of different race, their efficiency is less than same race. Nonetheless, Putnam believes the world is going to be one whatever their religion, race, and nationality is different.

Response

Every student might know that their own race group is more reliable than the other racial group. I am still feeling that. The article mentioned that the city and the town which have more diversity groups had less political clout and less recreation system. The reason why that appear is “”Hunkers’ downfall” and I just cannot agree with this part. I understand because hunkers are downfall so diversity can be bigger. However, if the government loses their power and the fewer amenities in the town, they are not just live well. In my opinion, if there are many races and diversity gathered in the one place, which means all of different culture came together. According to the article, different races cannot be the one group, and it just makes nonsense for me. I think the towns which have many races should have strong government power which can avoid racism problem and they should provide more amenities to make different races can familiar each other. I mostly agree with the article because the result of research shows me that I had same though with real world.
