I think that the auditor and the pollsters present clearly that that the American Dream is still there. People did some change in the definition of the dream from material thinking into freedom of opportunity but they still believe in it.
I would expect that due to the hard economical situation, the high unemployment and the collapse of the housing market the results of the pollsters would show a decrease to a larger extent of the people who believe in the Dream. Times are difficult, many people are unemployed, people lost their houses and have difficulties with making their living. Still only 3% believe that the "American Dream" is an illusion and cannot be achieved.
In my opinion the freedom of opportunity is the major and important tool that gives the Americans all the possibilities and means to achieve their ambitions and dreams.
